It’s Them!

It’s not us, not decent folks like you and me, not the people who pray like we pray, live like we live, dress and drive with similar tastes, have skins of similar tone, eat foods and have sex in similar ways.

It’s them, those … others. They look different, sound different, Hell, they even smell different from eating all those strange foods. They come here dirty and hungry wanting to do jobs that we wouldn’t do for wages as low as they would work. They threaten our economy by picking our lettuce, cleaning our toilets and collecting our trash. They come from violent places, so they must be violent, or at least some of them must be and we don’t know which of them they are because to me they all look alike.

It’s them. They are the problem. They have always been the problem because they are different. Except maybe in the fact that they want their loved ones to be safe. They feel they powerless against the governments they thought would protect them. They wish to live in safety in places that have become horribly unsafe.

What makes them think they should be allowed to live next door to you and me? How dare they think they can pray to their strange deities, those same deities they trusted to protect them back where they come from?

What this world really needs is more people like us — like you and me. Good people, who never lie or steal; people you can understand when they talk, people who conduct business in the same manner we do.

We need laws to keep them out, those Muslims and Jews, those Irish, Italians, Germans and Poles. We need a government who will build walls to protect us, who will listen to people to be sure they are thinking like we do, playing by the rules that we play by so that we can remain these Unitedstates, the home of freedom-loving people like you and me. To preserve our liberty and protect it, we must keep them out.

This is not my personal viewpoint. I don’t even think it is a particularly American perspective. I can picture an Apache Indian saying that about the neighboring Sioux, Comanche and those dirty cave-dwelling Navaho, not too mention this Mohawks with their outrageous hair styles.

People, are tribal by nature. They trust people who look and feel as they do. They may love a god so fiercely, that they believe their god will ultimately destroy all those who see things differently. Sometimes, they decide to help their gods expedite such matters. I imagine this is how ISIS sees it: I fear it is how some people in the US see it.

It makes me sad that this has not much changed in my lifetime.
